What Is Aphasia?

Aphasia is a disorder that affects speaking, understanding, reading, or writing, usually caused by a stroke or brain injury.

Aphasia does not affect intelligence. People with aphasia know what they want to say, but have trouble expressing it.

Types of Aphasia

1. Wernicke’s Aphasia (Receptive / Fluent)

  • Speaks in sentences that don’t make sense
  • Uses wrong or made-up words
  • Has difficulty understanding others
  • Struggles to repeat phrases

2. Broca’s Aphasia (Expressive)

  • Speech is slow and effortful
  • Leaves out small connecting words
  • Understands better than they can speak
  • Says related but incorrect words (“car” instead of “truck”)

3. Global Aphasia

  • Severe form of aphasia
  • Difficulty with speaking, understanding, reading, and writing
  • Very limited ability to communicate
